Which devices are the biggest energy consumers in the home?

You know the situation, everything is going well, and then suddenly the washing machine stops working. At first, you think: should I have it fixed? But soon you conclude that it might be better to buy a new one after all. Sometimes it seems more economical to last a long time with devices, but this is by no means always the best solution. Nowadays, many of these devices come with an energy label, which tells you exactly how much your new washing machine will use. We all know, measuring is knowing! But which devices use the most energy?

Dishwasher

Our great friend, the dishwasher. What would we do without that thing? It’s a relief to be able to put your used cutlery in the dishwasher after your meal. But what does our big friend actually consume?
Most dishwashers consume between 151 kWh and 273 kWh per year. To find out what your dishwasher consumes, you can use a smart plug. This measures exactly what the consumption of the dishwasher is. A dishwasher with energy label F costs as much as 820 euros more over 15 years than a dishwasher with energy label A! In addition, new dishwashers often have an “eco” program. This uses lower temperature water than the other programs and therefore also saves energy!

Refrigerator

Besides the dishwasher, the refrigerator is also a fine addition to our modern kitchen. Most refrigerators have an average consumption of between 50 and 400 kWh per year. The difference depends on the energy class, size, and model of the refrigerator. Do you know what your refrigerator consumes?
If you don’t know, a smart plug can help. It measures what your fridge uses and you can easily see this in the app.
Replacing an old refrigerator with a new one can save a lot of money. Sometimes this can amount to hundreds of euros per year!

Why your refrigerator may consume too much energy can have several reasons including poor insulation of the refrigerator which means the refrigerator has to work harder to keep the inside cooled. This results in higher energy consumption. A broken heat pump, bad rubbers, and coolant can also contribute to your refrigerator’s increased energy consumption. By measuring consumption, you can quickly find out if your refrigerator has kept up with the times, or requires replacement after all!

Washing machine

And suppose your washing machine actually breaks down. What would you do then? The introduction already gives two options, namely have it fixed or buy a new one anyway. For both cases, it is useful to know what your washing machine consumes. Also, in this case a smart plug can answer this. Perhaps your washing machine is fairly new and has an “eco” mode. It can run a short program, which can save a lot of energy. But for the same, you might find out via the smart plug’s app that your washing machine actually costs too much money! Then buying a new washing machine is probably the most sustainable solution for you.
Still handy, such as an app where you can measure the consumption of devices connected with a smart plug. That way you always have insight into your consumption. Also, with a smart plug, you can remotely turn on and off the devices connected to it. There is even a feature in the smart plug’s app where you can create a schedule for turning devices on and off. For example, you can set devices to turn on and off automatically.

Lighting

Did you know that you can even save energy by installing smart bulbs in your home? Besides the fact that LED bulbs have a longer lifespan, they also consume less power than a normal glow or halogen bulb. With a smart bulb, you can use the app to see how much power it consumes. You can also control the lamp remotely. For example, one option is to turn on the lights before you even get home, so you don’t arrive at a dark house! Furthermore, you can also adjust the colour and strength of the smart lamp via the app.

Now if your lamp socket is not suitable for the socket of a smart LED lamp, perhaps a smart plug is a good solution for you. By connecting your lamp to a smart plug, you can easily see how much your lamp consumes.
